6 Best Charities to Donate to in 2020
December 23, 2020
As we close out the rollercoaster of 2020, there’s no question we’ve all faced a lot. Yet most of us still have a lot to be thankful for. As the Grand Giraffe team reflected on this, we realized that our final post of the year should not be about buying presents or getting the best deals. It should be about giving back. To that end, we’ve highlighted the 6 best charities to donate to in 2020 – as we see it, anyway. If the spirit moves you, we encourage you to visit these charities’ websites and consider giving to the many who are in need this season.
A highly-rated charity at work for almost 20 years, Global Giving is somewhat unusual in the nonprofit, charitable space. Instead of using donations to supply food and life essentials to in-need populations across the globe, they support other nonprofits by aligning donors and well-vetted, on-the-ground operations. For example, ongoing disaster relief work is one of Global Giving’s priorities; they have assembled a list of trustworthy charities aiding communities affected by COVID-19, the California Wildfires, and the Rohingya Refugee Crisis, among other disasters. Visit their website (via the link above) to learn more and donate to causes you care about.
2: World Central Kitchen (WCK)
This one was pretty much a no-brainer for a list of best charities to donate to; food is always in need across the world, and the well-organized team at World Central Kitchen has done incredible work reducing hunger and stemming starvation in the world’s most impoverished places. Founded by esteemed Chef José Andrés, WCK endeavors to serve meals to those who find their lives turned upside-down in the wake of disaster. More importantly, they build on-the-ground support networks to help restore devastated communities and give those who go without a sense of dignity, worth, and an opportunity for healthy living.
Also focused on the problem of pervasive hunger, Feed the Children homes in on youth that go without meals – though their impact stretches internationally to communities that need basic medical care, clean water, and nutrition. In the era of COVID-19, they have spent considerable resources and energy to supply food to those who are unemployed and without basic necessities, while continuing to serve homeless populations and provide much-needed supplies to those in disaster-ridden areas of the world.
As difficult as 2020 has been for many – with thousands facing medical emergencies or lacking food and life essentials – many more also face a barrier to education. As one of our picks for the best charities to donate to this year, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund aims to address the financial challenges of attending college by providing support and opportunities to Black students. This support opens doors to professional growth and success otherwise exceedingly difficult to achieve.
Since 1971, this international nonprofit has connected skilled doctors with populations desperately in need of medical care. The organization has received the Nobel Prize, with many noting how critical their life-saving work has become in a world ever rocked by political upheavals, religious persecution, and government neglect. Their work today is as important as it ever was, with doctors and medical personnel working in more than 70 countries to heal, restore, and rejuvenate damaged communities.
We’ve made no secret of our love of animals and nature here at Grand Giraffe. In fact, we’re quite proud of our collective support of conservation causes. While the nonprofit organizations we support in this space are not a few, we wholeheartedly believe in each of them and their impactful work – from the preservation of mountain forests in China to restoration of marine life in inland rivers of the U.S. Our living world desperately needs our help, which is why the organizations linked above are tops on our list of charities to donate to in 2020.
There are, of course, other charities to donate to – there is much need across the world this year. If the charities above don’t speak to you, we encourage you to give to one that does. You can explore other highly-rated and well-reviewed charities at Charity Navigator.
