We made it – the end of 2020 with 2021 very much in sight. As we all know, much has changed in this rollercoaster of a year. In fact, 2020 ushered in quite a few new trends that we predict will pick up serious steam in the first quarters of next year. So don’t linger on the negatives of 2020; focus on 2021 trends so you can make the most of a propitious new year!

2021 Trend #1: “Business” apparel and “casualwear” will merge.

Okay, not a surprising trend, given how well we’ve all pivoted to remote work in 2020, but still – it’s worth keeping an eye on. Why? You’ll see designers uncovering never-before-seen mashups of traditional in-office outfits and the loungiest comfywear you can think of. We’re thinking interview getups you can wear on the couch Saturday mornings and at-home weekend clothes that double as sharp, “big meeting” attire. Just think: You can cut your wardrobe in half and still be style-forward.

2021 Trend #2: We’re going to obsess over home-connected devices.

This is already in the offing, but given our increased time at home, we’ll likely rediscover the importance of making home life easy and convenient. We’ll see a lot more lights connected to smartphones, TVs that respond to vocal commands – even coffee machines controlled by mobile apps. As we see it, all of this is just the tip of the iceberg. We’ll have smart washing machines, ovens, and other “intelligent” machines dotting American homes in the very near future. We may even turn the corner on affordable, all-electric vehicles…

2021 Trend #3: Homes will be increasingly designed to accommodate remote workers.

As remote work becomes more norm than anomaly, we’re bound to see an uptick in house, apartment, and condo designs that fold in the needs of the remote worker. We’re not just talking about a den or office where at-home workers can toil away; we’re talking about one-bedroom apartments with alcoves specifically for working and condos with living room nooks designed with workspaces in mind. Design trends, too, will pivot, showing us how we can convert a once-was single-use bedroom into a seamless work-live space.

2021 Trend #4: Travel will surge and people will splurge on luxe amenities.

As the COVID-19 vaccines rollout to larger segments of the population and authorities deem it safe for us to travel once again, you’ll see scores of Americans bouncing all over the world. To make up for lost experiences, they’ll go big – more first-class tickets, more posh hotel rooms, more luxe amenities across the board. Not only will this allow for distance from other travelers (old habits die hard), but they’ll feel somewhat restored after a year of stir-craziness.

2021 Trend #5: Charity giving will soar.

We’ve seen it in spades this year, unfortunately: Need is greater than ever across the U.S. Too many unemployed have faced hunger; too many families have suffered the burden of excruciating medical bills; too many have gone without. This pervasive lack has stirred up a new commitment to our communities that will result in increased charity giving through the first half of 2021 – and perhaps beyond. As hard as it is to see struggle, we hope that this generosity makes waves across the world, inspiring a new tradition of giving back to those in need.

There it is, Grand Giraffers – our predictions for big 2021 trends. But wherever we land, we at Grand Giraffe want you to know we are grateful – for you, for our communities, and for the opportunities that lie ahead. May the new year be filled with joy and prosperity for everyone.
